Persimmon: The Divine Fruit of Autumn — Seattle Japanese Garden

By A Mystery Man Writer

Diospyros kaki , an Asian species of persimmon, has been grown for its fruit over many centuries.  It’s also an important autumn “season word” ( kigo ) in haiku poetry. The genus word Diospyros is derived from Greek – and means “divine fruit” or “wheat of Zeus.”

Located within the Washington Park Arboretum, Seattle Japanese Garden is a spectacular 3 1/2 acre formal garden designed and constructed under the supervision of world-renowned Japanese garden designer Juki Iida in 1960.
