NAGA means Cobra in Sanskrit. The grandeur name was chosen for this macrame bag as we took inspiration from the divine shape of the Indian & Egyptian woven cobra snake charmer basket.
NAGA in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, is a member of a class of mythical semidivine beings, half human and half cobra. They are a powerful, charming species that can assume either wholly human or wholly serpentine form that can be dangerous but often beneficial to humans. We hope that this bag can be a translation of how much power we carry in our hands, and how we can use it to empower each other.
This vessel basket bag is made with hand-dyed macrame cotton ropes by our female artisan community in Java, Indonesia. It takes at least around 80 hours to make each bag, and this project helps to provide jobs and security for the artisans in this region.
